Damage Painter — Paint tears and dirt onto clothes [VRChat / Unity / lilToon] (Free trial available)

Descripción del producto

Damage Painter is a Unity editor extension for lilToon materials. Brush clothing in the Scene view, and tears (holes) and dirt are added only where you painted. The window can switch between English and Japanese.

Tested in VRChat: torn sleeves and a sooty shirt made with this tool show up on a local test avatar (SDK Build & Test).

No avatar models are included (tool and dirt textures only).

Included

  • Tears: Jagged, Frayed, Smooth, with an edge roughness slider. "Dirty the torn edges" adds dirt around each hole.
  • Dirt: Soot, Mud, Stains, Burn, Paint. Adjust the strength, tint and density (Paint is white, so the tint sets its color).

How it works

While you paint, only a preview is shown in the Scene view; the original materials, textures and meshes are not changed. In the Full version, "Save and use" copies the painted material slots (new files), saves the painted areas as black-and-white PNGs in Assets/KotokotoLab_Output/DamagePainter, and swaps only those slots on that mesh. Copies of opaque materials with tears become Cutout so the holes open; materials that are already Cutout or Transparent keep their kind. Even if other meshes use the same material, only the painted mesh changes. One Ctrl+Z undoes the swap (the created files stay). Opening a mesh you saved before lets you continue from the previous painting; saving again makes new files instead of overwriting.

Free vs Full

  • Free trial: paint and see it in the Scene view (mirror, eraser and undo stroke included). It cannot save, and the dirt textures are 256 px.
  • Full: everything above plus "Save and use" (goes into your upload), with 512 px dirt textures.

Notes

Tears do not cut the mesh; they make that area transparent, so the back of the cloth or the clothes / body underneath shows through (check before painting). lilToon materials only (lilToon Lite, Multi, Fur, Gem and similar kinds, materials with moving UVs or parallax, and meshes whose UVs go outside a non-repeating main texture, such as Wrap Mode Clamp, are not supported; the window shows the reason). Only this mesh's surfaces facing you are painted, up to 2 cm behind the surface under the brush (other meshes in front and see-through parts are not checked, so close cloth layers may be painted too). Areas sharing the same UVs get painted together, and triangles whose UVs span more than two tiles cannot be painted. If the material already uses the Alpha Mask (or both the 2nd and 3rd textures), replacing it requires ticking "OK to replace the original effect"; this also removes the original effect from unpainted areas (in the copy only). If a gimmick swaps materials with an animation, the animation's material is what you see. PC only. Meshes need Read/Write enabled. The preview appears only in the Scene view. Prefab Mode and Project prefabs are not supported. It does not change meshes or weights. Works without the VRChat SDK and Modular Avatar.

Requirements

Unity 2022.3 (tested on 2022.3.22f1) and lilToon (tested on 2.3.4).

How to install

  1. Drag DamagePainter*.unitypackage into the Unity Project window and press Import.
  2. Menu: Tools > Damage Painter. The window has an "English" checkbox at the top.
  3. Put a clothing mesh of an avatar in your scene into the window, choose Tears or Dirt and paint in the Scene view.

Importing the Full version over the Free trial replaces it.

Terms

Personal and commercial use are both OK. You may distribute or sell outfits and avatars that include materials made with this tool (including the copied dirt textures they use), as part of those materials; the original avatar, outfit and material terms still apply. Do not redistribute or resell the tool itself or its dirt textures, and do not distribute the textures on their own. Use at your own risk.
