Descripción del producto
Nova Calibrator (formerly QuestCalibrator) was rebuilt around the issues of the original, long-discontinued Space Calibrator. It fixes many underlying bugs and adds complementary features to push mixed-playspace tracking quality of life to the boundaries of what is possible within the closed Meta ecosystem (+ others, soon) and SteamVR.
New in 1.2 rebrand
- A redesigned overlay, with a first-launch setup that walks you through your headset, trackers and a first calibration.
- Protected chaperone: saves your SteamVR walls and puts them back if they get lost.
- An optional Lighthouse page that shows your base stations and which ones each device can see (work in progress).
- English, Italian and Japanese.
- Optional automatic updates.
- Continous calibration is supported and no longer marked as experimental.
- Many, many improvements over the pre-rebrand version based on exhaustive feedback from testers.
Will it finally get rid of drift?
No. Getting rid of playspace drift between Quest and SteamVR is not feasible due to the way quest works at the moment. But this is as much headroom as practically possible to minimize issues and substantially make the inevitable drift slower and more resistant to temporary issues.
I know my current playspace is not great for tracking. Will this give me better tracking even if I already know the problem lies with my lighthouse layout / lack thereof?
Yes. You are the goal here. Even if you don't have an ideal tracking setup, if you can spare the time, submit your logs! My philosophy is to make Nova ironclad against the worst-case scenario, not add features for the sake of it.
What about SLAM?
SLAM can't be turned off on a Quest that isn't rooted. Some calibrator apps turn it off, to then entirely drive the headset from the headset tracker, but Quest doesn't allow that under normal circumstances.
I have a rooted headset myself, but so far I've used root mainly to make tracking better for everybody, rather than to build features that depend on it. More capabilities for rooted headsets are planned (as an addition, not the focus), as well as direct support for non-Quest headsets with a similar override to the one other calibrators use.
Nova Calibrator aims to get as much as reasonably possible out of a standard setup without continuous calibration. You may find Nova gives you better results without continuous calibration than other calibrator apps do with it. That's my experience and the testers', but it's subjective, so judge for yourself.
Does it work for non-quest headsets?
I can't guarantee 100% that it will be better than alternatives when it comes to those (all of the testers were on quest, as those are the ones from when the project started). If you'd like to contribute to the project, open an issue with your headset and submit your detailed tracking log from the settings. The longer the session, the better. With those, I can directly improve Nova for your specific setup mix. I will say that however, at least a good 50% of tracking quality is dependant on SteamVR & vive tracker quirks, thus it should be strictly better if you're using those with say a Pimax or Galaxy XR.
Requirements
- PC VR through SteamVR with a Quest headset (tested with Virtual Desktop, should work for other solutions)
- ⚠ Uninstall OpenVR-SpaceCalibrator, and any fork of it, first.
