Music Box - Slowly Winds Down, Mechanism Moves Behind Glass | VRChat

Descripción del producto

A palm-sized music box with a marquetry lid and brass fittings. Open it with "Lid" in the menu: a mirror appears on the inside of the lid, a windup doll on a turning stage rises from the left compartment, and the milky glass around the stage softly lights up.

In the right compartment you can see the mechanism through glass. The pinned cylinder turns with the song, only the plucked comb teeth vibrate, and the air brake spins. One wind plays for about 2 minutes, and in the last 15 seconds the song, the mechanism and the doll all slow down together and stop.

For Christmas gift photos, or to hold in your palm in a bedtime world.

Features

  • Slowly stops as it runs down: "Wind Up" turns the key 6 times. The spring runs down only while the lid is open and lasts about 2 minutes (120 seconds). In the last 15 seconds, the song gradually slows and drops in pitch until it fades out, and the mechanism and the doll creep to a stop
  • A mechanism moving behind glass: the cylinder (290 pins placed note by note for 3 songs), 18 comb teeth (only the plucked teeth vibrate), the great wheel, an intermediate gear, the air brake (blurred when fast) and the spring barrel all turn at matching speeds
  • Changing the song shifts the cylinder a little sideways, like a real multi-tune music box (3 songs)
  • The doll rises when you open the lid: the lid opens 105 degrees (and bounces back slightly against the hinge stop), the graduated turntable and the doll rise, and the rim lights up. Closing reverses the order
  • Dances to world music: in AudioLink worlds it stops its own song, and the doll spins, bounces and sways with the bass. The light pulses with the bass too
  • When you go AFK, the mechanism and the sound stop (the spring does not run down)
  • Placement in the menu: right palm / left palm / top of head
  • Details: an eight-pointed star in marquetry on the lid (16 triangles in 3 woods) with a hemp-leaf pattern band, fine inlay lines on all 4 sides, brass corner fittings, hinges, clasp, round feet and a butterfly winding key, a mirror and the shop's gear crest inside the lid, velvet lining, lead-weighted comb teeth, and a blued-steel air brake
  • The doll has the same face and dress colors as our avatar, the Windup Doll Girl
  • 2 colors, both included: walnut and brass (deep red doll, wine-colored velvet) / white wood and gold (navy doll, blue velvet)
  • Load: 8,975 triangles, 5 material slots, 1 Audio Source, 0 PhysBones, 0 particles (what it adds to your avatar, counted in Unity). Custom shaders included (no lilToon needed). All designs are original
  • Modular Avatar ready: put it under your avatar and fit it to your palm or the top of your head (switch in the menu)

How "Wind Up" and "Lid" work

1. Press "Wind Up" and the key on the right side turns 6 times, filling the spring (about 2 minutes)

2. Open it with "Lid": the lid opens, the doll rises with its stage, the rim lights up, and the song starts

3. While it is open, the cylinder, gears, air brake and doll turn, and the plucked comb teeth vibrate

4. In the last 15 seconds the song slows and drops in pitch until it fades out, and the mechanism and doll slowly stop. Wind it again and it plays again

Closing the lid stops it right there (the remaining spring stays; open it to continue).

About the songs

The 3 songs are old melodies whose copyright has expired ("Silent Night" from 1818, Brahms' "Lullaby" from 1868, and the old English melody "Greensleeves"). We arranged them ourselves using only the 18 notes of this music box's comb, and the sound was synthesized by a program (no one else's arrangements or recordings are used).

The cylinder pins are placed one by one from the note tables of these 3 songs.

To use a song you like, you can replace the sound files (see "Changing the songs" in the manual). The pin layout on the cylinder stays the same as the original songs.

Menu (English menu prefab)

  • Music Box > Show: music box on/off
  • Music Box > Lid: open / close (closing stops the song and the mechanism)
  • Music Box > Wind Up: each press turns the key and fills the spring again (about 2 minutes)
  • Music Box > Placement: Right Palm / Left Palm / Top of Head
  • Music Box > Song: 1 Silent Night / 2 Lullaby / 3 Greensleeves (press the same song again for no song)
  • Music Box > Dance to Music: stops its own song; the doll dances with AudioLink

What's included

  • Prefabs x 2 colors (walnut and brass, white wood and gold)
  • FBX, textures (pattern, surface, normal, pin table), 2 custom shaders, 3 songs (OGG), animations
  • English-menu prefabs (_EN) next to the Japanese-menu prefabs. Use one or the other on an avatar, not both.
  • Instruction manual and Terms of Use in English and Japanese

Specs

  • Added to your avatar (counted in Unity): 8,975 triangles, 5 meshes, 5 material slots (2 kinds of material), 0 PhysBones, 1 Audio Source
  • Synced parameters: 21 bits (Show, Wind Up, Lid, Dance, AFK, Song, Placement)
  • All counts follow VRChat's rules (hidden parts are counted too) and show how much one prefab adds to your avatar.
  • The VRChat performance rank depends on the total with your avatar, so this item alone does not decide it.
  • 1 AudioSource (heard within 4 m, quiet volume), 0 PhysBones, 0 particles
  • Size: 124 x 88 mm, 72 mm tall (closed, to the base; 130 mm wide including the winding key)
  • No extra skinned mesh

Requirements

  • Unity 2022.3.22f1 (an avatar project made with VRChat Creator Companion)
  • VRChat SDK (Avatars) 3.10 or later
  • Modular Avatar 1.18 or later
  • lilToon is not needed (custom shaders included)

Please note

  • PC only. Not supported on Quest / Android.
  • No hand pose (palm facing up) is included.
  • The remaining spring is not synced. People who arrive later count from when they started watching, so the time until it stops may differ slightly.
  • The song is quiet and heard near the wearer (within 4 m). To turn the sound off, press the same song again in "Song" (the mechanism keeps turning).
  • The doll dances to world music only in worlds that support AudioLink. In other worlds it keeps turning slowly.
  • Stopping while AFK starts when VRChat decides you are AFK (we have not confirmed when the desktop version sets AFK).
  • If a viewer's Safety settings hide shaders, it is shown as a closed box.
  • The doll, the mechanism and the songs driven by the menu (Show, Lid, Wind Up, Placement, Song, Dance to Music): they move only inside VRChat (including Build & Test) or with Gesture Manager. If they look still in the Unity Editor, nothing is broken.

Terms of use

  • You may upload it to VRChat and similar services on your own avatars, edit it, and use it in streams, videos and photos (commercial or not).
  • You may not redistribute, resell or share the data (edited or not), or use it to train AI.
  • Full text: TermsOfUse_EN.txt in the download (Japanese original: TermsOfUse_JA.txt).

How this was made (AI-Assisted)

The 3D shapes, materials, shaders and texts of this item were made with scripts written with AI assistance. The 3 songs are public-domain melodies arranged by us; their sound was also synthesized by these scripts (no recordings or AI music generators). A person checked how it looks and moves in Unity before release.
